Perfume has always had a transcendental quality for me; just a bit, and suddenly I am ready to take anything on. It’s like confidence in a bottle, and it’s always the final step in my routine before I address the day. Some would say a picture is worth a thousand words – I would say a scent is.
I typically use spray fragrances, so the world of solid perfumes is new to me. There is something so wonderful and charming about solid perfumes. It’s a small moment of tactile gratification where you slow down to immerse yourself in the care of your personal scent; your outward projection to the world. With scent being so closely tied to memory, you had better take the time to make sure yours is a good one!
So much of our culture is focused on convenience and doing things quickly. We have lost something valuable in the art of ‘slow living’. These little aromatic compacts have renewed my ideas surrounding self care and rituals. Taking the time to apply my perfume, inhaling the scent deeply…it can completely change my mood and set the tone for my day; it’s meditative in a sense. These perfumes go beyond just being ‘perfume’; they’re an olfactory experience.
I had the opportunity to try the entire collection from D’Antonio Perfumes, hand poured solids from my home city – Houston, Texas. Creator Tiffany wanted to create a line that would be safe to wear around her daughter Tessa, so she went to Berkeley, California to train under natural parfumer Mandy Aftel of Aftelier. There are five scents total, each with their own endearing profile and personality: Summer Love, Tessa, Lakehouse Cabin, Eskimo Kisses, and Amore.
Summer Love wears the lightest on me. This scent to me is the most herbaceous with a soft hit of floral notes and a spicy finish, not unlike most summer loves. I imagine days spent hiking surrounded by wildflowers, and finishing the day near a campfire under the stars. I absolutely love the nutmeg in this fragrance, it’s a really unique note.

The gourmand of the bunch is Tessa. Surprisingly simple and sweet, it’s comprised of 3 notes: Hawaiian sandalwood, cocoa, and vanilla. The initial scent I detect is the cocoa, but the strongest note that pulls on my skin is the sandalwood. It’s smooth and grounding. Vanilla gently wraps everything together with a dollop of sweetness.

I have to say, the scent Lakehouse Cabin surprised me. I don’t know what I was expecting, but I honestly love this scent. Just reading the notes doesn’t give an accurate picture of the beauty and depth of this fragrance (it’s one that I definitely recommend trying a sample of!) There is a fresh honeyed sweetness, a soft floral note, the freshness of fir trees, and warmth. It truly captures a weekend spent away somewhere inviting and magical. This is a chypre style scent with a twist.

Another surprise: Eskimo Kisses. Normally citrus fragrances pull sour on my skin rather than being a burst of freshness. Also, clove tends to pull overly sharp and bitter on my skin. Eskimo Kisses features both of those notes without the typical negative association I have with them. It’s a surprisingly fresh and sweet perfume with an unexpected twist of spice and crushed rose petals to soften it out. This scent is like a ray of warm sunshine.

My absolute favorite though, is Amore. When I read the notes, I had a feeling it would be because it’s heavy on the jasmine which I’m notoriously a sucker for. This perfume is absolutely hypnotic; all at once comforting, familiar, yet totally alluring. It’s sweet and heady with the emphasis on jasmine, and the bois de rose adding a subtle spicy, woodsy, rose-like note. The staying power of this perfume is also the strongest on me. If you’re looking for a sexy floral, this is the one!

Each perfume is housed in a small metal compact with a mirror included; these are incredibly travel friendly since they are solid form, and the tin can be repurposed after the perfume is used up. They also come in a handmade pouch which is great to keep the tin in, or for other goodies so they don’t get lost inside your purse. These scents wear close to the skin and are meant for for personal enjoyment and for sharing with those we love most. These are not the perfumes that announce themselves before you walk into a room. I get a few hours out of each before needing to refresh, the longest wearing being Amore with around 6 hours. Simply apply them wherever you normally apply fragrance. I even like to rub a little through the lengths of my hair for when it catches in the breeze.
