Red lips are iconic. Think Marilyn Monroe, Lucille Ball, red carpet events. They are the epitome of high glamour. They frame your smile and the words you speak.
In the era of the Great Depression, despite rations and overall less spending, lipstick sales increased (a trend we still see when the economy dips). The theory is that even when times are tough, women take solace in the little things that make them feel good about themselves, and while they may not have a fortune to spend elsewhere, lipstick is an inexpensive way to feel a little more confident and empowered.
Kjaer Weis is such a luxe brand, with an eco-friendly focus (hello reusable packaging and organic ingredients!). The Kjaer Weis KW Lipstick* is, in my opinion, the perfect red lipstick. It has a satin matte finish, long wear time, and a neutral undertone. Anytime I want to elevate my makeup game, I grab this lipstick. It’s like confidence in a tube; one swipe and you’re set.
Because the formula isn’t too dewy, I find it can be worn easily without a lip liner and you won’t have to worry about feathering. I’ve also used this lipstick like a stain by putting on a lip balm and a streak of it in the center of my lips and blurring outward: it leaves the prettiest cherry popsicle color behind.
One of the main problems I have with most lipstick is the dreaded ‘wax line’ that sometimes develops where your lips touch; I have yet to encounter that issue with this lipstick, and I believe it’s due to this lipstick being light enough formula-wise while having high pigmentation. I also don’t find this lipstick overly drying even though it’s more of a matte finish. (Worth noting, I almost always prep my lips with a balm prior to lipstick application.)
